The Getaway Girl

While we're still working through the last bits of spring rain, I'm dreaming of summer. I can't wait until I can don my antique floral headscarf, push up my blue-hued sunglasses and smudge on the dark eyeliner. I imagine powder-soft sand on my feet, pop-pink on my toes, and the lazy smell of cocoa butter. Psychadelic kaftkans, abstract bangles stacked to the nine's, and striped
floppy sun hats shade my eyes as I peer across palm tree spotted beaches against azure blue water.

Hmm. But for now, I'll have to plan my vacation escape through the hue-tinted shades of Polyvore. As I stare at the rain spotting my diamond-paned french windows, I realize I still have a bit of time left to construct my perfect getaway scene...!

Collage-aholic

Collaging might be my most favorite thing ever. You start with one and build on the vibe that one image gives you, until you have a full poster-like board that communicates (hopefully) an idea, era, mood or otherwise. I've been doing this forever and until recently have I found a way to incorporate this into my work. Since then, a full collage-wall takes over the inside of Les Pommettes. We've had collage stickers, collage sign up books, collage background on our Twitter page, collage trimmed our website for a while.....and now we've added to this idea with Tumblr, Pinterest and Polyvore. Each gives you different things; Tumblr is mostly my inspiration "tear-sheet" wall, Pinterest translates my Tumblr inspiration to our in-store brands & merchandise, and Polyvore makes color/print story layouts. I love that these creative tools now help translate & communicate our vision for seasons, brands and collections. I hope you enjoy these "windows to my soul"! xoxo D.

Aahhhh.....Tata.

Tataborello. J'aime beaucoup! I may have been a little slow on the jump on this one, but wow, well worth the wait. Impeccably made, intricate, tiny, almost completely hidden craftsmanship details make me shake my head in bliss. Semi precious stones, silk thread weaving, antiqued rhinestones worked into unmistakenly feminine jewels that are not only gorgeous to wear, but awesomely thrilling to inspect. Every second and third glance makes you discover another part of these pieces and I for one, surely plan on saving some of these for me when they arrive. DS

Anton & Anetta

I always love it when a designer does something unexpected and when its hand-made, well, it just sort of sends me over the edge. This 'good wishes' card that landed in my in-box did just that.

Don't you always wonder where people get their inspiration from? Who feeds these creative geniuses? A little peek into Anton Heunis' world with this handmade collage from one of his longtime mentors, British born South African artist Anetta Westoby & her husband.

This super charming card is made up of various beads, buttons, paper collages & gemstones.

Their Saturday morning lessons on life & art have been shaping his creative development for years, and I for one, love having this little glimpse into his inspirational world.

C'est une bonne idea, Anton!!!

Welcome, Camilla & Marc!

I wanted to take a minute to welcome to our roster Camilla & Marc. I feel like most of our talent these days is coming up from down under, and this Spring 12 is no exception. Take the brother and sister team that make up this super hot brand. Sister Camilla is the design & PR arm and brother Marc steers the helm with his business smartness. Whatever the division, this duo packs a punch with its masterful use of powerful color and cleverly cut classic shapes. We never pass up an opportunity to mix color with feminine sophistication and thus, we welcome Camilla & Marc to our chic boutique - and can't wait to style our clients in this gorgeous collection!

Smythe's Velvet Smoking Jacket in emerald has been one of our best sellers for fall and there's no question why. Superior tailoring, impeccable attention to detail and super smart cuts are just a few of the reasons that Smythe is Les Pommettes go-to designer for jackets. And because Smythe only produces the amount of clothing that store's order, once the pieces are gone for the season, they're gone forever. Each customer that leaves our store with a Smythe jacket is leaving with an exclusive and rare bit of fashion. It goes with out saying: we really love Smythe.

The Little City That Could

We've been on the bandwagon for years with the no fur/leather/suede thing, but was sooooo happy to see our little city get behind it - at least in part. Kudos to the City of West Hollywood! No doubt the New York Times is now helping to spread the word and we are happy our city's move is getting some national attention on animal rights issues! One tiny leap....hopefully the fashion industry will take notice and make some changes. It reminds me that I did an interview a few months back with a writer for WWD about the textile, fur and fashion industry and the article never saw the light of day. Because you'll never see that article, I was pining about the fact that there ARE viable options for fake fur or replacing the idea altogether - but its such a multi-faceted issue that the consumer is just as much responsible for the trade as the designers, textile mills and stores are - its just easier to blame the designer. We all need to do our part, as little as it may seem, to stop the cruelty for vanity's sake. And we're just tickled Les-Pommettes-pink that our little city was the first. Well, almost. After us. ;)

Mad about Mawi

Want a little NYFW breaking news? Shantal Vansanten rocks Mawi's emerald tusk earrings she picked out from our boutique. While sitting front row at Luca Luca at New York Fashion Week, Shantel looks breath-taking with a pop of primary color. The vibrancy of her simplistic red shift with the green accent looks oh so fresh. Come take a peek at the Mawi in store, and replicate a look by this oh so sweet celeb.

Spring - Fast Forward

Around this time of year after all of the craziness of spring deliveries, trunk shows, all sorts of graphic design and then the laziness of summer, I get cautiously optimistic about next season's Spring, and reflect on the 6 months prior. Yes, I know, Fall is just arriving. But buying season is upon us and I always know where I will find inspiration and what brands I look to help reignite my love for fashion- and spark my energy for the remainder of the year.

While there's no one spot, I compiled a little collage of all sorts of things that have managed to stick with me visually throughout the entire 6 months- helping to feed my hunger for inspiration, and as a result, my creative responsibilities. And- because I'm fickle, that's gotta count for something!

Animal Friendly : Conscious Couture

We want to thank Ciara at Animal Friendly for providing a blog about how fashion can be stylish without harming our furry friends. Having been animal-friendly for five years, we're beyond excited that veganism is an emerging trend and people are catching on! Check out, Delia, the owner's interview below...

What was the inspiration behind Les Pommettes?
To provide a feminine shopping experience that houses a collection of both big name and indie designer brands that isn't too frilly like most feminine stores.

Are you a vegetarian? How did animal friendly become a core value of the store?
Yes, have been for over 20 years. It became a core value mainly because I felt as a retailer buying & selling multiples of product that it was kind of cruel to perpetuate the suffering of animals just for that reason. My business didn't have to rely on the sales of animal skins & fur just to sell fashion- we could do that quite easily without it. I also feel like it's just as easy to fill that dollar slot with other types of merchandise that is fashionably enviable- it just takes the conscious decision to edit out pieces or styles that include those materials.

Do you carry silk and wool? If so, what has been the reaction to these pieces that contain animal-derived materials?
Yes. Wool isn't really the issue, because my customers don't like wool's hand anyway, but silk definitely is. Synthetics have come a long way in this area but there still is a distinct difference in its feel. Silk & Cashmere are on the front of my mind in the next arena to tackle.

On a side note, I think one of the reasons people dont' go vegetarian or vegan in their purchasing is because it is presented as a daunting task. I've had people tell me its all or nothing; meaning, you have to be completely vegan in every single aspect of your life or you should do nothing at all. I don't agree with that thinking, I think that you can make small differences and if you're doing a little bit, that's good too. I.e. if you cut your meat consumption down to a couple times in a week that's better than eating it every day for a meal. Everything counts. So if we can, as a shop, prevent 50 animals from being killed then we feel good about it.

Can you tell us a fun story about something that happened in the store?
Not on story in particular but I can tell you it's a funny signt when all the sales girls are smelling, tasting and biting things, testing to see if it's animal....Everything's gotta pass the taste & smell test! ;)

If you had to use three words to describe Les Pommettes, what would they be?
I can't use 3. It's an intimate, feminine shop that offers a good variety of big & indie designers. We love color and print, but can mix it effortlessly with neutrals, nudes & greys. Some seasons we're a bit cleaner & modern, but others are romantic and feminine. You will always see something you don't see anywhere else, and usually only one piece- we like to keep it tightly edited.

What is your favorite emergin trend for Fall 2011?
Calmness. There is a calm, relaxed, lady like vibe to our fall collections. It's not too hard, not over the top, not over-indulgent; just quality, pretty and wearable. There are beautiful pieces to add to your wardrobe, both in jewelry & clothing.

UNFORGETTABLE

Just in: Coco's "Forget Me Not" collection! Blending modernist avant-garde, surrealism, exotic animals and talismans, Coco's imagination is ever-expanding and materialized in her digitally printed scarves, turbans and now beach towels. A London-based graphic artist who leads a career as a communication consultant for major house-hold names, Coco wows us with her "side-project", which has blossomed into a gorgeous and truly unforgettable silk based collection.

We totally dig her fairy-tale and ethereal imagery- she lures you into her dream world using color waves, mythical prints and unforgettably soft silks. Coco has re-invented the scarf with a current yet totally whimsical feel. Seriously- how could we forget, Coco?

Exquisite Knits by Cecilia Prado

Cecilia's story is just as charming as her collection. This Brazilian beauty has weaved her way into our hearts and left a strong imprint here at Les Pommettes. She has carefully crafted these drop dead gorgeous knits in her own family-owned factory in San Paulo, which allows her to maintain perfection in each design. Cecilia has inspired us with her imagination and playful yet sophisticated pieces that are sure to become heirloom pieces in your closet. Natural hues spiced with rainbow hints, her pieces are like butter in our hands; no comparable knit is as soft as these, even with the delicate metallic threading detail. And, as a topper, her site sets just the right tone for this brand; we LOVE the music.....so dreamy! Move over, tradition- Cecilia Prado is here to rock your world.
